Skagway is a stange place in an amazing setting. The topography is pretty much the same as Haines but the town is a world apart. Some 900,000 tourists decend on the town every year between May and September... and the town only has 900 residents! The town is like Tombstone Arizona. Kinda fake. They play up, and make a fool of their rich mining history that includes the infamous Chilkoot Trail. Early 20th century prostitutes leading groups of obese cruise ship tourists around yelling at any man, "hey honey!" and at any woman, "want a job doll?" I have no problem with prostitution, but this was rediculous. If we got awat from downtown, things quieted down alot. the hiking trails were devoid of people as the cruise ship people dont hike (many of them zip around in Tubby Carts) and the locals are too busy catering to the tourists to do any hiking. A trip Nicole and i want to go back to do, is the Chilkoot Trail. you can hike the route over a few days then take the train back to town. I also got to met some local guides who were doing some climbing.
