Juneau, Alaska.

May, 15. 2008. Part One.

Mendenhall Glacier is one of Juneau's most famous features. The glacier decends from the mountains in Mendenhall Valey and at its closest is perhaps 1/4 mile from houses in the Mendenhall suburbs. The glacier flows off the 1,500 sq. mile Juneau ice field. Since the 1700's the glacier has been receeding, more and more each year. Some years the glacier receeds as much as 600 feet. When you stand at a glacier that is disapearing so quickly and touch the ice as it drips into pools at your feet, you cant help but feel the tears well up in your eyes. Its funny to feel compassion for a giant ice cube.
