Metlakatla is a small Tsimshian village a few miles from Ketchikan. They have the whole island which used to be used in WWII. There is still one of Alaska's largest runways here. The forests where very lush but far smaller than on the mainland. The trees were stunted here unless right on the water. They had a interesting dump. When we first arrived, the locals were coming up to us and saying, "welcome to met" and just generally introducing themselves. A few even knew where we were staying and in what room! its a small town and we learned quickly to not be freaked out by this.
